Zynga opens New York office

By Laurie Segall, staff reporter

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Zynga is the latest tech company expanding its tentacles out of Silicon Valley and into New York City. The gaming giant purchased New York-based game developer Area/Code late last week and launched its first office in the Big Apple.

"This addition is truly deepening our bench of world-class talent, with a team that ultimately shares our passion for innovation and success," Zynga spokeswoman Ashley Lipton said in a prepared statement.

In the last eight months, Zynga has been on an acquisition tear, scooping up nine companies. Before buying Area/Code, the company most recently acquired Flock, an early pioneer in creating a social Web browser.

Area/Code is also the company Foursquare founder Dennis Crowley joined when Google's acquisition of his last company, Dodgeball, went sour.

"I'm joining the kids at area/code who are knee-deep in building all sorts of Big Games (remember PacManhattan? ConQwest?), " he posted on Flickr in 2007.

Zynga founder Mark Pincus picked up the title of "best founder of the year" at TechCrunch's 4th annual Crunchie's Awards last week.

Pincus launched the company in January 2007 and named it after his American Bulldog, Zinga.

The hot Silicon Valley startup has more than 225 million users playing its games each month through its Facebook, MySpace, iPad and iPhone applications.
