Carrier reportedly to buy exclusively from planemaker for 'several decades'

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Delta Air Lines and Boeing Co. reportedly will announce a deal in which the carrier will buy all of its airplanes from Boeing well into the next century.
The agreement calls for Atlanta-based Delta to buy dozens of wide-body and narrow-body jets from Seattle-based Boeing, according to Thursday's Wall Street Journal. The deal also includes an extended agreement that makes Boeing its exclusive source for aircraft for "several decades."
Valued at billions of dollars, the contract is similar to the one AMR Corp.'s American Airlines entered into with Boeing several months ago, the newspaper reported.
For Delta, the agreement will likely provide handsome and flexible purchase terms. For Boeing, it is a major triumph over competitor Airbus Industrie, a European consortium.
Delta notified Airbus on Wednesday that it hadn't won the contest, the Journal said.
The immediate order from Boeing includes replacement aircraft for the fleet of L-1101s that the airline is retiring as well as several narrow-body aircraft.
