Computer maker plans major mainframe upgrade
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - IBM Corp. plans to unveil a long awaited upgrade of its microprocessor-based mainframe computer Monday, according to press reports.
The upgraded model is expected to match the power of old mainframe models that the IBM no longer manufactures.
IBM's mainframe revenues were off in the first quarter, in part because customers were holding off making purchases until the upgraded model was introduced.
"Clearly there is some anticipation," Linda Sanford, general manager of IBM's System/390 Mainframe line, told Reuters. "We do have very good customer excitement about this product."
IBM controls about 80% of the mainframe market. In response to IBM's move the second-place market leader, Amdahl Corp., is expected to announce an upgrade to its mainframe line as well.
