Experian forced to take service off-line due to security concerns
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - One day after making consumer credit reports available on its Web site, credit reporting agency Experian Inc. has taken the service off-line because of security concerns.
The company, formerly known as TRW Information Systems & Services, Thursday launched a service that allowed consumers in most states to purchase a copy of their credit report for between $2 and $8 and have it delivered instantly online.
After more than 2,000 people attempted to obtain their reports, Experian said it learned of a security flaw that may have caused reports to be sent to the wrong consumers. In addition, only 213 of the 2,000 reports ordered were ever shipped.
The company's Web site Friday still had a link giving online ordering information. However when site visitors continued to the actual ordering screen, a message told them the service had been taken off-line due to "a minor technical difficulty."
A company spokesman said the system was thoroughly tested before it was opened to the public. No relaunch date has been set.
