Airplane leasing firm to receive 61 passenger planes through 2006

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - On the same day that European aerospace consortium Airbus Industrie announced an aircraft order worth an estimated $3.9 billion, arch rival Boeing Co. landed a similar order worth about $4.5 billion-- from the same company.
The Seattle-based aerospace giant was awarded the order for 61 jets by International Lease Finance Corp., Boeing spokeswoman Liz Verdier told CNNfn.
The order calls for Boeing to provide six different kinds of passenger jets that seat from 108 to 400 people, Verdier said. Boeing will deliver the planes through 2006.
Boeing did not disclose the exact price of the order, but the combination of models at current prices would fetch about $4.5 billion
ILFC, a Los Angeles-based concern that leases planes to individual airlines, will supply the Boeing jets to clients including Trans World Airlines, Aero Mexico and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Verdier said.
Prior to Tuesday's order, Boeing has delivered 32 planes to ILFC since September 1996, Verdier said.
The 61-plane order includes 31 model 737-600s and 10 model 777-200IGWs, she added.
Shares of Boeing closed up 2-1/2 at 57 in Tuesday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
Tuesday's orders highlight the fierce rivalry among the two largest passenger jet makers in the world. Boeing rules about 60 percent of the global aircraft market. Recently acquired McDonnell Douglas controls about 4 percent, and Airbus holds the rest.
