New service aims to help beginners make productive use of Internet
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - C|Net Inc. Monday officially launched Snap! Online, its newest Web site. However, unlike its previous efforts which have targeted those familiar with the Internet, Snap! is designed to serve as a roadmap for newcomers.
Some of the nation's largest Internet service providers, including Earthlink Networks and regional telephone companies BellAtlantic and BellSouth, have signed distribution deals to put specially-branded versions of the service in front of their customers.
C|Net so far has sunk about $5.2 million into the site. Most of that money came from the company's sale of its stake in the E! Online entertainment Web site.
Like PointCast and other Internet content providers, Snap! is using the channels metaphor to categorize its content. The channels cover topics such as business, computing, health, travel, money and entertainment. There also are channels that provide local news and weather.
While the Web site is the heart of the service, later this year the Internet service providers partnering with C|Net on Snap! also will give their customers CD-ROMS that include Internet tutorials. The branded versions also will help customers establish accounts on partnering Internet service providers.
Advertising revenue generated by the site will be split between C|Net and its content partners. Among its content partners is CNNfn.
