NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Compaq Computer Corp. is facing another shakeup in its marketing operation for the third time in less than two years.
The company announced that Roel Pieper has resigned as senior vice president and general manager of worldwide sales, marketing, service and support. Pieper joined the Houston computer maker when it acquired Tandem Computers Inc. where he was chief executive officer.
Compaq also said Jim Schraith had resigned as vice president and general manager of the company's North America sales division. Sources that Schraith was rumored to be going to a Silicon Valley start-up, but would not elaborate.
Michael Heil, senior vice president of Compaq's consumer products group, will succeed Pieper. Rod Schrock, a vice president in charge of the Presario computer line, will succeed Heil. The company said it is launching a search to find a successor to Schraith and to fill Schrock's current position.
Compaq issued a brief statement confirming the shakeup, but would not elaborate.
Analysts say the announcement wasn't altogether surprising, although the timing suggests it might not have been Compaq's idea.
"Roel Pieper's leaving is not a surprise. Generally, when you're [a manager] of an acquired team, you only stay on for a while," said Peter Andrew, technology analyst at A.G Edwards.
Dan Niles, technology analyst at BancAmerica Robertson Stephens, said he wouldn't have been surprised to see the shakeup six or nine months down the road, but was surprised it came so early.
"I doubt if the company wanted this to happen given that it is so soon after the Tandem merger," he said.
Compaq (CPQ) shares were off 1 to 55-15/16 in mid-afternoon trading.Back to top
