LOS ANGELES (CNNfn) - Walt Disney Co.'s independent film distribution unit Miramax proved once again to be a mighty competitor against major film studios, helping Disney top the list of Oscar nominations Tuesday. Miramax films pulled in 16 nominations, bringing Disney's total to 23.
A combination of Miramax films including "Good Will Hunting," "The Wings of the Dove" and "Mrs. Brown" pushed Disney past News Corp. Ltd., which was the second-most nominated studio with a total of 21 Oscar nods.
News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox unit pulled in the most nominations by far for one movie as the epic "Titanic" gained a total of 14. Paramount Pictures, the film distribution arm of Viacom Inc., shared in distribution of "Titanic," but that was Paramount's only nominated film.
Other films receiving nominations under the News Corp. banner were "The Full Monty," distributed by Fox Searchlight, and "Anastasia", by 20th Century Fox. For Disney's Miramax, "Good Will Hunting" received nine nominations, "Wings of the Dove" had four and "Mrs. Brown" garnered two. Buena Vista Entertainment, also a Disney unit, received for nominations for "Kundun" and two for action movie "Con Air."
Films coming under the Time Warner banner received a total of 18 nominations, led by "L.A. Confidential" with nine. Sony Corp. movies also pulled in 18 nominations, putting it fourth among its major rivals. Dreamworks, the newest studio in town, received a total of four nominations, all for the Steven Spielberg-directed epic "Amistad."
