Retailers continue to dominate the expected quarterly earnings reports, with chains expected to report during the week including Staples and Tiffany & Co. Kmart also is expected to report fourth-quarter earnings, although an exact date hasn't yet been set.

Events:
- Asia Society address: U.S. Secretary of Commerce William M. Daley is scheduled to make his first speech after a recent tour of Japan, Korea and Singapore, on the topic of "Asian Turmoil and What's Ahead."
