What would result from a combined Nasdaq and American Stock Exchange?
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Talks are underway on Wall Street between the Nasdaq stock market and the American Stock Exchange about a possible merger. This raises many issues, including whether a union of the two exchanges could bring competitive problems like the ones corporations face.
Investors may also be wondering if this market merger could bring risks to stocks they own that are traded on these exchanges.
CNNfn spoke with financial experts who discussed their take on this potential joining of forces.
Maria Ramirez, chief executive and president of Maria Fiorini Ramirez, Inc., believes that a merger between the two entities is certainly going to give some other exchanges a run for the money.

Harvey Saferstein, a partner with Chadbourne & Parke, said the possible merger could be opposed if the government thought it would lead to higher prices and less competition.

Bill Singer, former attorney for the Nasdaq and the AMEX, called the potential deal "significant," but believes it will have little immediate impact on investors.
