Seat adjustment leads to finger injuries in Venture and Silhouette models
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - General Motors Corp. said Wednesday that it is recalling approximately 152,000 1997 and 1998 Chevrolet Venture and Oldsmobile Silhouette minivans due to reports of injuries to customers attempting to adjust the seats.
There had been 15 reports of finger injuries and three reports of severed fingers, GM said.
The company said it expected repair parts to become available in August, at which time dealers will be notified of repair procedures and customers will receive written notice of the recall.
Until then, GM (GM) suggested that owners of the vehicles should release the latches with the nylon strap found at the base of the seat back when removing or tumbling seats forward -- as illustrated in the owner's manual under the heading, "Seats and Seat Controls."
Customers should not use the paddle lever found on the outboard edge of the seat for this purpose, the company said, as the reported injuries were inflicted by customers placing their fingers under this lever when releasing the latches.
The repair will cover the latching mechanisms to prevent future injuries, the company said.
