McGwire collectibles are rallying the baseball-memorabilia market
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Mark McGwire's record-breaking 62nd career home run was a glorious occasion for fans and sports-memorabilia collectors alike. So how much would people pay for the historic bat? McGwire's uniform? The game program?
And how much for the saddle-stitched pearl of great price, the home-run ball itself?
Experts say it could be worth at least $1 million, if it ever hits the open market at all. Many fans would rather see it enshrined in Cooperstown where fans can enjoy it - and, in fact, like the bat, the uniform, and even the scorecard of game announcer Jack Buck, that's where it's going to go.
"I would love to see it in the Hall of Fame, display it somewhere where everybody can see it, because it's about the ultimate memorabilia piece you could own," said Joe Davis of J&J Sports Section.
As you might expect, McGwire cards, particularly his rookie cards, have soared in price this season. Some now cost several hundred dollars.
"Well, I've been in the business for eight years now," said Davis. "And he's as hot as anybody I've ever seen."
Tavern and restaurant owner Andy Klubock wouldn't mind a little bit of Mark McGwire -- his bat for instance.
"I get them from all different sources. I get some from the players
I buy through charity auction," he said.
Klubock has 300 bats so far, many of them autographed. He also collects shoes, pictures, cards, boxing gloves, you name it. He collects for fun.
"A lot of people wish they were major-league baseball players or rock stars or maybe the President of the United States," he noted.
