NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Broadcom Corp. said Monday it has developed a single-computer-chip solution for cable modems, technology the company hopes will boost widespread acceptance of Internet access through television cables.
Broadcom said it has squeezed the circuitry for combining TV signals and computer data onto one chip instead of three, which the company said will sharply cut the cost of home equipment for Internet access via cable wires.
The company said cable modems featuring the new chip also will allow cable operators to provide telephone service over their networks.
The new technology, Broadcom said, will enable delivery of data, digital video and telephony services at speeds 1,000 times faster than standard 56 kilobits-per-second modems.
Broadcom (BRCM) shares were up 1-5/8 at 76-5/8 in early trading. Back to top
