IBM unit to distribute RealNetworks technology to corporate customers
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Lotus Development Corp. said Monday it has agreed to distribute RealNetworks Inc.'s latest Internet multimedia technology to its corporate customers.
Lotus, a unit of IBM Corp., will integrate RealNetworks' RealSystem G2 media-delivery system with its Lotus Domino messaging software and Lotus Notes collaboration software.
RealSystem "streams" video and audio over the Internet and corporate Intranets, allowing users to play files on their computers without downloading them first.
Lotus Notes will also include RealNetworks' RealEncoder G2 software, which allows users to create multimedia content for others in their workgroup. Lotus Domino Server will integrate RealServer G2 for streamed video training.
The deal, which makes RealNetworks' technology available to 25 million Lotus Notes customers, may be a blow to Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), which has not been able to break through the Web-based multimedia market. RealNetworks holds about a 90-percent share in the streaming technology market.
IBM (IBM) shares rose 3-13/16 to close at 127-5/16 in Friday trading. RealNetworks (RNWK) shares closed at 27, up 3-11/16.
