NEW YORK (CNNfn) - U.S. stocks closed Monday just the way they opened, mixed, after a lackluster session livened by a technical halt in trading and several unconvincing attempts for rallies.
According to preliminary data, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 20.08 points to 8,432.21. Market breadth on the New York Stock Exchange was positive, however, with advances leading declines 1,766 to 1,314 on trading volume of 604 million shares.
The Nasdaq Composite, feeding on strength in the technology sector, gained 31.13, or 1.8 percent, to 1,724.36. The S&P 500 index rose 1.69 to 1,072.36.
Bonds were extremely volatile, tumbling in the morning, then rallying before eventually closing mixed. The benchmark 30-year Treasury bond gained 1 point in price, lowering the yield to 5.10 percent.
The dollar also advanced, finishing higher against the German mark and the Japanese yen. Back to top
