Taurus, Sable, Continental models need fix for corrosion problem
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - About 3.3 million Taurus, Sable and Continental cars are being recalled by Ford Motor Co. for possible corrosion problems.
The 1986-1995 Tauruses and Sables, and 1988-1994 Lincoln Continentals were originally sold or registered in the Northeast and Midwest states, Washington D.C., and seven Canadian provinces.
The automaker said the use of salt during snowy weather in those areas could cause the mounts at the rear corners of the subframe, which supports the engine and transmission, to separate due to corrosion.
Ford said that when the mounts separate, the rest of the subframe can drop, causing steering problems.
Ford said it believes only about 1 percent of the vehicles being recalled are affected by the problem.
A spokeswoman for Ford said the problem was mentioned in reports involving seven accidents and two injuries.
Ford said owners of affected vehicles would be notified by mail. The company said it was asking owners to bring their vehicles to dealers for installation of new reinforcement plates, attaching bolts and plate nuts.
Ford (F) also announced the recall of 170,000 1996-1999 Crown Victoria police, fleet, taxi and natural gas vehicles and Town Car limousines for a ball joint concern. And it recalled 19,000 Super Duty F-series motor home chassis vehicles for an accelerator cable concern.
Ford stock was up 15/16 to 56-5/16 in late-afternoon New York Stock Exchange trading.
