ARIA sings happy tune, $1B in holiday sales won't lift AOL, Amazon hot again

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - It seems it will take more than a mere change of year to pull that high-flying Internet sector off from its fiery pace, as several industry players again blasted off Monday.
But one stand-out on the downside was America Online (AOL), off 5-9/16 to 149-9/16, even after the Internet player announced 1998 holiday-shopping expenditures by its members through the online service topped $1 billion.
On the upswing was e*Trade (EGRP), surging 7-19/32 to 54-3/8, or 16 percent, on news the Internet-based broker will split its stock 2-for-1.
Elsewhere, online hardware and software vendor Creative Computers (MALL) shot up 8-7/16 to 40-3/16, the online auctioneer uBid (UBID) soared 23-5/8 to 130-1/4,
Bellwether Internet bookseller Amazon.com (AMZN), which was called on by SportsLine (SPLN) to run its media retail arm, rose 24-3/16 to 345-7/16. SportsLine added 1-11/16 to 17-1/4. Internet portal Yahoo! (YHOO) rose 13-1/8 to 250-3/16.
CMG Investment Services (CMGI) roared up 7-3/4 to 114-1/4 after the Internet investor said it would exercise its option and boost its stake in Magnitude Network, a provider of Internet solutions for radio broadcasters.
Meanwhile, getting an injection was Ariad Pharmaceuticals (ARIA), up 1-3/16 to 2-7/8, or 70 percent, after a report in The Wall Street Journal said the drug maker and University of Pennsylvania scientists have discovered a way to deliver a gene therapy that spurs red blood cell production in lab animals.
Cashing in its chips perhaps a bit too early, Hilton Hotels (HLT) fell 2 to 14-3/4, or 16 percent, after the hotelier's spin-off Park Place Entertainment (PPE) began trading for the first time. PPE shares rose 9/16 to 6-15/16.
A handful of telecom issues in Europe rallied following the launch of the new euro currency, which propelled continental stock markets overall higher.
Bourses in Frankfurt and Paris each leapt more than 5 percent.
The American depositary receipts of Deutsche Telekom (DT) rose 5-1/4 to 38, France Telecom (FTE) gained 6-9/16 to 85-1/2, and Royal PTT Netherlands (KPN) leapt 6-7/16 to 56-11/16.
