Airline cancels additional fee for tickets purchased beyond its Web site
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Delta Air Lines said late Tuesday it is withdrawing the surcharge it imposed just weeks earlier on domestic tickets purchased anywhere but its Web site.
Consumer groups and travel agents were quick to voice outrage over the additional fee -- $1 for each component of a domestic flight, usually $2 for a round-trip purchase. Calling the move a "slap in the face to consumers," advocates for travelers didn't buy the No. 3 U.S. carrier's justification that the charge was intended "to offset rising distribution costs." Instead, they said it was a move to reduce consumer choice and, in effect, raise prices.
According to published reports, Delta, which was the first and so far only airline to impose such a charge, said it is withdrawing the additional fee in response to market demand.
