Company begins offering photo processing service on CD-ROM disks
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - People throughout the country will be saying "cheese!" on CD-ROM if Eastman Kodak has its way.
Rochester, N.Y.-based Kodak (EK) has begun offering Kodak Picture CD, a new service that processes photographs on CD-ROM disks and will be available through more than 40,000 retail stores that handle standard film developing, a Kodak spokesman said Tuesday.
Picture CD was developed jointly by Kodak and Intel Corp. (INTC), with software by Adobe Systems Inc. (ADBE). With the system, consumers filling out forms for regular photo processing can also check a box to get their film scanned onto a compact disc for about $9.
Picture CD offers several options, including the ability to zoom and crop images, e-mail and print pictures, create computer photo albums and change color to black and white.
Charlie Smith, a Kodak spokesman, said the company is rolling out the product now with the goal of being nationwide by summer.
Kodak has tried to launch photo-CD products twice before and failed both times. Smith said the company feels more confident now because more consumers have CD-ROM computers. The company has done extensive test marketing, Smith said.
Kodak shares closed down 1-3/8 Monday at 67-3/8. Intel was up 4-7/16 at 132. Adobe was up 5/16 at 46-3/8.
