Journalists recognized for distinguished business and financial reporting

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Several journalists were recognized Tuesday for their outstanding contributions to business and financial reporting.
The G. and R. Loeb Foundation announced recipients of the 1999 Gerald Loeb Awards, which are among the highest honors in the journalism profession.
The top honoree, Business Week's Editor-in Chief Stephen B. Shepard, received the foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award.
"Throughout his journalism career, Steve Shepard has earned a reputation for editorial integrity and independence, a reputation he lives up to daily as editor at Business Week. His continual reinvention of the magazine together with his unflinching support of investigative journalism has taken business journalism to a whole new level beyond commoditized news coverage and routine analysis," said Loeb Foundation President Sue Johnson.
Following is a list of the other 1999 Loeb Award recipients:
Large newspapers
Joel Rutchick, (Cleveland) Plain Dealer: Series of articles uncovering lavish spending practices and suspect activities by the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority chief executive officer.
Medium-size newspapers
Fred Schulte and Jenni Bergal, (Orlando, Fla.) Sun-Sentinel: "Cosmetic Surgery: The Hidden Dangers."
Small newspapers
Jennifer Hieger and Bill Heisel, Jr., Yakima (Wash.) Herald Republic: "The Dairy Boom: Growth, Trouble and Transition."
Magazines
Shane Tritsch, Chicago Magazine: "Bull Marketing," an article that disclosed the miscalculations in the reported stock performance of the Beardstown Ladies investment club.
Commentary
Walter S. Mossberg, Wall Street Journal: "Personal Technology" columns.
Deadline/beat writing
New York Times staff: Coverage of the near collapse of Long-Term Capital Management.
Network and large market TV
