Computer company head sees online sales growing to 80 percent
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Dell Computer Corp. could see its online sales grow to as much as three-quarters of its total computer sales, Michael Dell, founder of the world's largest direct-sale computer vendor, said Monday.
Michael Dell, speaking on CNNfn's "Moneyline News Hour", said the company is doing about 30 percent of its sales online and he expects that figure to rise.
"We're seeing our Internet sales roughly double or triple every year," Dell said. "We were at $18 million a day in the first quarter. It continues to grow. It was 30 percent (of total sales). We think it goes to 50 percent, then to 70 and 80 percent."
Dell, the company's chairman and chief executive officer, did not elaborate on how long the online growth process would take.
Wall Street has been giving Dell Computer Corp. (DELL) a hard time recently because the company has not delivered the stunning 50-percent-plus sales growth of earlier days.
While admitting that it was difficult to maintain such high figures, Dell said Monday that the company will continue to grow faster than the overall market.
Shares of Dell closed up 2-1/4 Monday at 38-15/16.
