NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Qualcomm Inc. and Lucent Technologies said Thursday they will jointly develop technology for a service that can pinpoint the location of a wireless phone in the case of an emergency call.
The two companies said the technology already can pinpoint the origination of a call to within 15 feet outside and 100 feet indoors. Federal Communications Commission regulations require all wireless 911 calls to be pinpointed to within 410 feet by October 2001.
Qualcomm (QCOM) and Lucent (LU) will jointly develop and promote the standards, known as E911.
The hybrid approach combines global positioning satellites, cellular phone networks and modifications to the handsets themselves in order to help emergency officials locate a call's point of origin. Back to top
