NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Dell Computer Corp. rapped its gavel down Monday, joining other companies in the trend toward offering online auction services.
Dell, known until now as one of the top direct computer sellers, on Monday opened its new auction site, www.dellauction.com.
Unlike more established auction sites such as eBay, which provide a variety of offerings, Dell's auction site will focus on computers. Users can auction their computers, regardless of brand, and Dell also will sell used and refurbished Dell computers and peripherals from its own storehouses.
Dell (DELL) joins a growing movement toward offering auction services. Perhaps the most notable convert to auctions was Amazon.com (AMZN), which launched its own bidding service in April.
Dell's decision marks yet another move by the Round Rock, Texas-based company to expand beyond its conventional computer seller operations.
Dell said last week it would begin offering Dell.net, its Internet access service in Europe, to consumers in the United States.
"Auctions are just one more way Dell is becoming a single-stop source for computer buyers," said Richard Owen, vice president of Dell Online.Back to top
