NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Apple Computer Inc. will develop products with America Online Inc. to further integrate its computers with AOL's popular instant messaging service, the companies said Thursday.
AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) is the online service's system that allows users to send text messages to each other in real time. AIM currently has more than 40 million registered users.
While Mac owners currently can download AIM and message any other AIM users, Apple is looking to create even further integration between the two companies, but no products are available yet.
America Online (AOL) found itself in a tussle with Microsoft over instant messaging earlier this week when Microsoft (MSFT) rolled out its own such service.
AOL objected to Microsoft's plan to allow AIM members to message its own service's users, a process that required AIM members to release their screen names and passwords. Back to top
