NEW YORK (CNNfn) - A company plans to give away 1 million iMacs, the popular desktop from Apple Computer Inc., in a move toward giving away more well-known and expensive brands.
The deal being offered by Santa Monica, Calif.-based FreeMac.com is similar to one by Free-PC.com, which offered a free personal computer to users who agree to give up personal information and allow desktop ad banners on their computers.
FreeMac said the giveaway will begin in September, with customers who submit their e-mail addresses to the site being notified the day before the giveaway takes place.

Customers who are chosen will receive a free iMac, the popular, fruit-colored computer rolled out by Apple last year.
Along with their computers, Free-PC participants also get e-mail and Internet access. However, so far only 10,000 of the 1.25 million who applied for those computers have actually received one.
FreeMac's deal is the first time Apple computers have been offered in such a giveaway. Other free-PC giveaways have often focused on less expensive computer brands.
The Free-PC offer, for example, gave away Compaq Presarios which retail for about $599, but only to the first 10,000 customers and would not guarantee what computers the rest of the participants might receive. The iMac, however, starts at $1,199.
The only similar iMac giveaway was one offered in February by One Stop Communications. However, in order to receive a "free" iMac, participants had to agree to buy $100 worth of goods each month for 36 months at a specified site and pay $19.95 per month for Internet access from the firm.Back to top
