NEW YORK (CNNfn) - National Semiconductor Corp. is selling its personal computer processor unit to Taiwan's Via Technologies Inc. for $167 million.
Via will get the MII x86 line of processors while National Semiconductor will keep the MediaGX line of processors, which forms the base of its new Geode, a line of chips geared toward the personal appliance market.
The companies expect the deal to be completed within a month, pending regulatory approval.
Most of the operations involved in the deal are located in Texas, Arizona and California, along with some manufacturing assets in Singapore.
The deal is part of a strategy National Semiconductor announced in May to scale back some of its units and cut jobs. At the time, the company said it planned to exit making personal computer processors, the brains of the computer which manage the running of PC operations.
The company is hoping to focus on its traditional base of analog chips and move away from the PC business, an area where it has struggled against entrenched firms like Intel (INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).
In June, National Semiconductor (NSM) announced the sale of its Cyrix PC processor business to Via Technologies, a Taiwanese maker of chip sets.
Shares of National Semiconductor gained 9/16 to 25-1/8 in Monday trading.Back to top
