NEW YORK (CNNfn) - New claims for unemployment benefits fell slightly last week, the Labor Department reported Thursday, again demonstrating the nation's continuing tight labor market.
The number of Americans filing claims for first-time state unemployment benefits was 286,000 for the week ended Sept. 4, down from a revised 290,000 the week before. Economists surveyed by Reuters had anticipated 294,000 initial claims.
The four-week moving average, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, rose nominally to 287,500 from a revised 286,750 the prior week.
Continued claims fell to 2,198,000 for the week ended Aug. 28, the latest data available, down from a revised 2,221,000 a week earlier.
In early trading, the benchmark 30-year Treasury bond was trading at 3/32 of a point, with a yield of 6.07 percent. Back to top
