Former Netscape head switches to adviser role at America Online

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Former Netscape head Marc Andreessen is leaving his role as chief technology officer of America Online Inc. to take up a part-time advisory role, the company announced Friday.
Andreessen will be replaced by William Raduchel, who most recently was chief strategy officer at Sun Microsystems, planning the company's long-term strategy.
As for Andreessen, he will step into a part-time "strategic advisor" role which will take on AOL's increasing investment activities.
AOL said Andreessen had requested the opportunity to spend more time working with start-up firms and nurturing newer companies, something for which he achieved fame as the co-founder of Netscape Communications, a software firm and developer of the popular Navigator browser.
"I'm looking forward to my new role, which will allow me to combine my desire to focus more time on getting involved with start-ups with the opportunity to contribute to AOL's future success," said Andreessen.
Andreessen became the chief technology officer of America Online in February after AOL bought his company. AOL announced its acquisition of Netscape in November 1998 in a $4.2 billion deal.
His task at the time was to evaluate AOL's technological alternatives and help the company stay competitive in the heated Internet access climate.
Raduchel, said AOL, will incorporate much of the same duties, focusing on the company's architecture, technologies and strategic alliances.
In particular, AOL will be looking for Raduchel to implement further the online service's strategy of "AOL Anywhere," a plan to offer AOL's service in many places, from the airport to the gas pump.
"Bill sees and understands the possibilities of a connected world and has the expertise and the experience to help make it a reality," said AOL chief executive officer Steve Case. "As more and more consumers want to take their connectivity with them beyond the desktop, Bill's vision will be critical in charting the company's future course and delivering on the promise of AOL Anywhere."
For his part, Andreessen will advise the company on emerging technologies and new investment opportunities, splitting his time between working with start-ups and AOL technology issues and potential investments.
America Online (AOL) is the world's largest online service, with 18 million members and another 2 million subscribers to its CompuServe online service.
Shares of America Online were down 1/16 to 96-3/16 in early afternoon trading Friday.
