HealthCentral.com signs $65M content agreement, files for public offering
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Internet search engine AltaVista and medical information service HealthCentral.com agreed Thursday to a content partnership valued at $65 million.
The companies said the pact spans three years, but did not disclose further details about the financial arrangement.
Under the deal, HealthCentral.com would be the exclusive provider of medical information to AltaVista, a majority-owned operation of Internet investment firm CMGI Inc. (CMGI). Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) owns the remaining stake in AltaVista.
AltaVista's new health section, featuring an "ask the doctor" service and medical information library, is expected to debut later this fall.
The deal marks the increasing popularity of health information on the Internet and another partnership between a fledgling health data service and a general interest Web network. The online health companies see larger Web networks as a way to direct traffic to their sites. Another online health startup, Medscape.com (MSCP), which went public earlier this week, is in $30 million deal to provide content to America Online Inc.
HealthCentral.com filed Wednesday for an initial public offering that would raise an estimated $86.2 million. Besides health-care information, the Web site also features an online shopping service for prescription drugs and other items.
CMGI stock gained 1-15/16 to 102-1/4 in late morning trading Thursday.
