NEW YORK (CNNfn) - In an effort to deal with the Internet interfering with company productivity, Xerox Corp. fired at least 40 employees for viewing inappropriate Web sites.
The firings come months after Xerox (XRX) installed hardware and software to monitor Web sites visited by any of its 92,000 employees worldwide.
Company spokeswoman Christa Carone said the majority, but not all, of the employees were fired for viewing pornographic Web sites.
"This is not a case of someone going to Amazon.com and ordering a couple of books," Carone said. "This was really, really excessive misuse."
Carone added that those fired were spending the majority of their day on inappropriate sites.
A recent survey by the American Management Association says 67 percent of companies use some form of electronic monitoring of their employees. And 45 percent of companies review employee communications, such as e-mail, telephone calls and computer files. Back to top
