LONDON (CNNfn) - Palm Computer Inc. announced a tie Wednesday with Britain's Psion to provide wireless access for its popular PalmPilot hand-held computer.
Shares in Psion (PON) jumped 15 percent in London, though Palm parent 3Com Corp. stopped short of signing up as an equity partner in the Symbian joint venture Psion leads to develop technology for the next generation of wireless services.
Psion has drawn in Nokia and Ericsson as well as Motorola (MOT) and Japan's Matsushita to promote its Epoc operating technology through the Symbian partnership.
Nokia will launch the alliance with 3Com (COMS) by developing pen-based, mobile computer-phones using the interface which has given the PalmPilot a 68 percent share of the global hand-held market.
"The proposed joint initiative between Symbian and Palm, when concluded, would further increase the strength of the Symbian alliance, particularly in U.S. markets,'' David Levin, Psion chief executive, said during the Telecom 99 trade fair in Geneva.
The Palm Computing alliance puts Psion's Epoc system in a clear, head-to-head competition with Microsoft's Windows CE operating system in the market for smaller computing devices.
Palm Computing is a unit of 3Com which last month announced plans to spin off the business next year. Back to top
