AMD unveils 750MHz chip

Microprocessor slightly faster than Intel’s 733MHz Pentium III

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Advanced Micro Devices Monday unveiled a 750-megahertz computer microprocessor that is slightly faster than the most powerful chip of its rival, Intel Corp.
    The company said the new Athlon chip offers users technical capabilities including 3D graphics, audio, video, CAD, digital content creation and productivity applications.  
    The Athlon processor is the second speed upgrade offered by AMD to users since the processor's introduction. It is priced at $799 in bulk quantities of 1,000.
    Intel’s (INTC) current fastest Pentium III chip operates at a speed of 733 megahertz (MHz). Officials at Intel weren’t immediately available for comment.
    AMD (AMD) also unveiled its 533MHz AMD-K6-2 processor with 3Dnow! Technology, which is geared to lower-end computer models. Compaq (CPQ) said it will use the 533 chip in its Presario Internet PCs.
    In early morning trading Monday, AMD charged up 1-1/4 to 28-15/16. Intel fell 1 to 79-1/4. Back to top
