Failure to meet non-flammability standards cited for recall of 231,000

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Clothing retailer Gap Inc. said Thursday it will recall 231,000 pairs of Gap and Old Navy brand children's pajamas because they failed to meet federal flammability standards and could pose a risk of serious burns.
The recall is being done in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which oversees rules requiring sleepwear fabric to be flame resistant and self-extinguishing, if ignited. The clothes can be returned to any Gap or Old Navy store for a refund and a $10 gift certificate.

Gap said it hasn’t received any reports of injuries related to the pajamas, and all the recalled clothes have been removed from store shelves. The pajamas, made from 100 percent polyester fabric, were sold in GapKids, babyGap, Gap Outlet and Old Navy stores nationwide from August 1999 through Dec. 1999.
The announcement follows a similar move by the company on Dec. 2, but includes additional styles that were tested and failed federal flammability standards. Consumers should call Gap Inc. at 1-800-GAPSTYLE or 1-800-OLD NAVY, or go to the retailers’ two respective web sites at www.gap.com or www.oldnavy.com for more information.
