NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Qualcomm Inc. and Ericsson Microelectronics disclosed plans Wednesday to co-develop new wireless technology.
The solution will incorporate Qualcomm's (QCOM: Research, Estimates) Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and Ericsson's (ERICY: Research, Estimates) Bluetooth wireless standards.
Bluetooth is a short-range radio technology developed by a group founded by Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia and Toshiba and is designed to eliminate the need for wired connections.
The Qualcomm/Ericsson technology will deliver wide-area voice and Internet services to Bluetooth-enabled terminal devices. For example, the companies said, hand-held voice and data transmission devices can be used to update schedules while synchronizing with a PC, transmit pictures taken with a digital camera, exchange electronic business cards, unlock car doors, or tune in to radios.
"The true promise of wireless technology lies in its ability to expand the potential of personal appliances," said Bo Andersson, vice president and general manager of Ericsson Microelectronics.
The alliance follows Tuesday's Qualcomm announcement that it will license its CDMA technology to China Telecom, which is expected to produce millions of dollars in royalties for Qualcomm.
That announcement sent Qualcomm's stock up 9-1/16, or 7 percent, Tuesday to 136-1/16. Ericsson finished the day up 5-3/8, or 7.2 percent, at 79-15/16. Back to top
