Initial claims drop by 20,000 to just below critical 300,000mark

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for
unemployment benefits fell to 283,000 for the week ended Feb. 12 from a revised 303,000 the week before, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday.
Claims near or below the 300,000 level are consistent with a tight job market.
The four-week moving average of claims, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, rose to 281,500 for the Feb. 12 week from a revised 276,750 the week before.
Continued claims were reported at 2,147,000 for the Feb. 5 reporting period, the latest data available.
Eight states reported an increase in claims of more than 1,000 in the week ended Feb 5., the latest period for which that information is available. North Carolina blamed layoffs in construction, textile, and transportation industries.
South Carolina had layoffs in manufacturing. Layoffs in food, apparel, and service industries put Tennessee on the list, while Texas reported layoffs in the chemical and transportation industries. Alabama had layoffs in the lumber and wood industries.
