NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Dear Jane: I intend to provide services to small companies who do not have the manpower or expertise to handle routine office work, such as putting the files in order, issuing purchase orders or invoices, handling telephone calls and organizing appointments. My services may also include setting up meetings with business associates, running errands, bill payment, etc. The companies who require my service would pay a retainer fee or pay by the project. Is this a good idea?
It sounds like you are positioning yourself as a professional organizer. These folks are in great demand right now, especially among busy, disorganized entrepreneurs. Skilled organizers charge between $50 and $100 an hour, so there is good money to be made.
Many business owners desperately need help with the basics of running an office, but few have the time or money to hire skilled help. You'll have to fit your fees to meet the demand in your area.
I'm not sure business people will want to pay you a retainer. Charging by the hour is a better approach. You might change the hourly rate based on the project. For instance, you might charge less for running errands than for preparing invoices.
Asking for payment in cash may sound like a good way to boost cash flow, but it's a quick way to get yourself in BIG trouble with the tax man. Smart business owners won't be willing to pay you in cash because they'll need checks or receipts in order to deduct the money they pay you as a legitimate business expense.
Start small by printing up a flyer outlining all the services you can provide, with a sample fee structure. Try to line up a few steady clients so you will have some control over your time. You'll also have to decide whether you will do all the work in the client's office, or be able to take some projects home. You might be able to do the billing and paperwork in your office, since many small businesses don't have an extra desk available.
