NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Eli Lilly & Co., which has seen declining sales of its best-selling drug Prozac amid increased competition, asked federal regulators Tuesday to approve a once-a-week version of the popular antidepressant.
If approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the new formula would be the only antidepressant on the market that could be taken weekly, instead of daily.
Prozac went on the market in 1988, and since has been approved in the U.S. for treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder and bulimia.
Competing products include Zoloft, made by Pfizer Inc. (PFE: Research, Estimates), and Celexa, co-marketed by Forest Laboratories  (FRX: Research, Estimates) and Warner-Lambert Co. (WLA: Research, Estimates).
Shares of Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly  (LLY: Research, Estimates) slipped 1-1/8 to 58-1/8 in morning trading, amid a sluggish day for pharmaceutical stocks. Back to top
