Schering recalls inhalers

Company says some Proventil, Vanceril inhalers may not contain active drug

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Schering Laboratories announced Wednesday it is conducting a recall of certain aerosol inhalers manufactured before Sept. 30, 1999, as they may not contain the active drug.
Schering said in a press release that while it is conducting the recall on the "remote possibility" that an inhaler may not contain the active drug, it believes all of its "aerosol products currently in the marketplace are safe and effective."

Patients with unopened Proventil albuterol inhalers and Proventil refills should return them to their pharmacy. Those patients who have open Proventil inhalers and are using them with good results need not return them. Patients with opened or unopened Vanceril double strength and Vanceril inhalers should return them to their pharmacy. The company stressed that the recall does not include products with expiration dates of October 2001 or later.
