NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose to 283,000 for the week ended April 22, from 257,000 the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday.

The claims were at their highest level since the 285,000 of the week ended Feb. 12, 2000 week.

A weekly reading below 300,000 indicates a tight labor market.

graphicThe four-week moving average of claims, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, rose to 267,000 for the latest period from 262,500 the week before.

Continued claims were reported at 1,930,000 for the week ended April 15, the latest data available. This was down from a revised figure of 1,974,000 for the previous week.
