NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Dear Jane: I design T-shirts with astrological signs. How do I get my product out in mail-order catalogs? Which catalogs are the best?

Most catalogs welcome new products from outside vendors. Buyers usually want to see a few samples, sent along with a cover letter detailing the prices and availability. Since every company is different, it pays to contact the company's buyer before sending out any unsolicited samples.

Mail-order giant Lillian Vernon Corp., for instance, reviews thousands of new products sent to its Rye, N.Y., offices with the hope of attracting the eye of a buyer for Vernon's numerous catalogs. When I interviewed Lillian Vernon a few years ago, she invited me inside the locked "sample" room. The room is stacked from floor to ceiling with thousands of submissions. Some are great products; some will never make the pages of a Vernon catalog.

You also might try to promote your shirts as a premium or gift-with-purchase to be offered when someone buys an astrology book from a local bookstore. Begin by contacting the owners or managers of local stores before contacting the major chains.

Finally, send shirts to celebrities who you know follow astrology. You may get lucky and persuade them to wear your shirt in a publicity photo.
