NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Playtex Products is recalling about 1.8 million of its Classic Patterns Cherubs and Soft Comfort latex pacifiers due to faster than normal aging of the latex that causes the nipple to detach from the shield, presenting a choking hazard to babies.

The Westport, Conn., company has received 21 reports of pacifier nipples detaching from the shields, but no injuries have been reported.

graphicOnly Classic Patterns "Cherubs" and Soft Comfort latex pacifiers are being recalled. The word "Cherubs" is embossed in bold block letters on the colored knob of the pacifier shield of the Classic Patterns pacifiers.

The Soft Comfort pacifiers have a soft, butterfly-shaped shield, available with or without a swivel handle. "Playtex" is embossed on the swivel handle. They come in a variety of colors and designs and are packaged individually or in sets of two.

The pacifiers were sold nationwide before June 2000 for $2-to-$4, depending on whether it was a single or double pack.

Consumers should stop using and return all defective pacifiers directly to Playtex for a free replacement or a $3 coupon toward the purchase of another Playtex infant feeding or soothing product.  Playtex can be reached at (800) 522-8230, or Playtex Products Inc., 20 Troy Road, Whippany, NJ 07981.  Back to top
