NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Dear Jane: I'm a Web designer. I love the company I work for, but the work is getting onerous and the pay isn't too great. The company has been bought out as well. Should I stick it out or go out on my own?

If you are an experienced and talented Web designer you should be able to write your own ticket right now. Good designers are in such high demand that you could either work for an agency on different accounts, move to another company or freelance.

Since your current company is in transition, it may pay to stick around for a few more weeks to see what happens with the new management team. You may be able to get a raise or promotion if the new owners recognize your talents. If things don't work out, it may be time to go out on your own.

The problem with working on your own is that you will have to handle your own marketing and promotional efforts. During the transition to independence, keep your day job while investing some time and money in designing and distributing a wonderful promotional piece about your work. Make a list of the companies you would like to work for or buy a targeted mailing list from a list broker.

You also should register with several online talent agencies to get a sense of the demand for your talents and the fees you can charge.
