NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Thinking of hiring a summer intern? Students can be a great asset to any summer cleaning or mailing or database project. But remember, student employees may not have the same polished "know-how" as other employees.

Devote the first few days to the basic job fundamentals: how to dress, what the work hours are, how to answer the phone, how to take messages. Don't assume the student knows your office etiquette. When you give a task, show them first what you want. Sometimes kids space out when you're giving them verbal directions.

If you're looking to hire a student, the first place to post your advertisement is a local high school or college. If you want someone with specific skills, you might give the posting to a specific academic department.

Try sites like: summerjobs.com and coolworks.com. "Don't forget your word of mouth," says Mel Kleiman, a Houston-based hiring consultant and the author of "Hire Tough, Manage Easy: How to Find and Hire the Best Hourly Employees."

Be sure to put something in writing, confirming the wages, hours and schedule.
