Electronics retailer signs appliance deal in midst of store expansion
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Electronics retailer Best Buy Co. said Wednesday it would begin distributing Whirlpool appliances at its stores.
Minneapolis-based Best Buy (BBY: Research, Estimates), which is in the midst of opening a slew of new stores in the New York metropolitan area, will sell Whirlpool's (WHR: Research, Estimates) KitchenAid brand appliances beginning in September.
"The addition of KitchenAid supports our efforts in appliances and the marketing effort for the entire store," said Mike London, Best Buy's senior vice president and general merchandise manager.
KitchenAid ranges, refrigerators and dishwashers, will be sold in Best Buy's 350 stores nationwide.
The agreement comes as rival Circuit City (CC: Research, Estimates) gets out of the appliance business to focus on home office and consumer electronics products. In addition Home Depot (HD: Research, Estimates) earlier this year began offering home appliances for the first time
Shares of Best Buy gained 1-1/4 to 75-5/8 in trading Wednesday. Whirlpool shares remained unchanged at 42-5/16.
