This follows a 4.7 percent May increase and is the largest increase since July 1991. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.3 percent. Year to date, new orders are 10.4 percent above the same period a year ago; new orders for the second quarter are 2.9 percent above the first quarter. Shipments increased $3.7 billion or 1.0 percent to $384.9 billion, following a 2.2 percent May increase. This is the eighth increase in the last nine months. Year to date, shipments are 8.2 percent above the same period a year ago; shipments for the second quarter are 1.8 percent above the first quarter. Unfilled orders increased $24.3 billion or 4.3 percent to $582.5 billion, following a 1.2 percent May increase. This is the eleventh increase in the last twelve months and the largest on record. The unfilled orders-to- shipments ratio was 2.64, up from 2.56 in May. Inventories increased $2.4 billion or 0.5 percent to $481.8 billion, following a 0.3 percent May increase. This is the ninth increase in the last ten months. The inventories-to-shipments ratio was 1.25, down from 1.26 in May. New Orders New orders for manufactured durable goods in June increased $21.5 billion or 9.7 percent to $242.9 billion, revised from the previously published 10.0 percent increase. This is the largest increase since July 1991. Transportation equipment had the largest increase, $20.4 billion or 42.2 percent to $68.8 billion, mostly due to aircraft and parts. This is the largest increase on record. Instruments and related products increased $1.6 billion or 10.3 percent to $16.7 billion. Industrial machinery and equipment increased $0.4 billion or 1.0 percent to $44.0 billion. New orders for nondurable goods decreased $0.2 billion or 0.1 percent to $166.3 billion. Chemicals and allied products, paper and allied products, and tobacco products had the largest decreases. Shipments Shipments of durable goods in June increased $3.4 billion or 1.6 percent to $218.3 billion, revised from the previously published 1.5 percent increase. Transportation equipment had the largest increase, $2.8 billion or 5.5 percent to $52.7 billion, due to motor vehicles and parts and railroad equipment. Electronic and other electrical equipment increased $0.8 billion or 2.1 percent to $41.3 billion. This is the seventh increase in the last eight months. Instruments and related products , up four of the last five months, increased $0.4 billion or 3.0 percent to $15.4 billion. Industrial machinery and equipment decreased $0.2 billion or 0.5 percent to $42.3 billion. Shipments of nondurable goods increased $0.3 billion or 0.2 percent to $166.6 billion. Petroleum and coal products had the largest increase, $1.5 billion or 8.1 percent to $20.4 billion. Chemicals and allied products decreased $0.6 billion or 1.6 percent to $36.5 billion. Unfilled Orders Unfilled orders for durable goods in June increased $24.6 billion or 4.6 percent to $556.8 billion, revised from the previously published 4.7 percent increase. This is the eleventh increase in the last twelve months and the largest on record. Transportation equipment had the largest increase, $16.1 billion or 7.1 percent to $242.8 billion, due to aircraft and parts. This is the largest increase on record. Electronic and other electrical equipment, up seventeen of the last nineteen months, increased $5.9 billion or 6.0 percent to $104.5 billion. Industrial machinery and equipment, up twelve consecutive months, increased $1.7 billion or 2.0 percent to $88.6 billion. Instruments and related products increased $1.3 billion or 2.7 percent to $48.8 billion. This is the largest increase since July 1997. Inventories Inventories of durable goods in June increased $0.9 billion or 0.3 percent to $300.8 billion. This is the ninth increase in the last ten months. Industrial machinery and equipment had the largest increase, $0.3 billion or 0.5 percent to $61.1 billion. This is the third consecutive increase. Inventories of nondurable goods, up twelve consecutive months, increased $1.5 billion or 0.8 percent to $180.9 billion. By stage of fabrication, June finished goods increased 1.1 percent in durables and 0.8 percent in nondurables. Work in process decreased 0.4 percent in durables and increased 1.7 percent in nondurables. Materials and supplies increased 0.4 percent in durables and 0.4 percent in nondurables.
