First-time filings for state unemployment benefits edge up by 2,000 in latest week

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits totaled 276,000 for the week ended July 29, up from a revised 274,000 for the prior period, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday. U.S. economists had forecast U.S. jobless claims of 286,000 for the week.
The four-week moving average of claims, however, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, fell to 295,750 from a revised 300,000 for the previous reporting period.
Continued claims were reported at 2,104,000 for the July 22 week, the latest data available, down from a revised 2,175,000 reported for the prior period.
Delaware, Texas and Georgia reported an increase in claims of more than 1,000 for the period.
Georgia reported more layoffs in textile industries, Delaware cited layoffs in the automobile industry, and Texas had layoffs in the service industry.
