NEW YORK (CNNfn) - More Americans are using debit cards to get cash, buy groceries and take the family out on the town. The number of users has grown steadily in the past few years.

Debit cards seem like a perfect companion. A bank card that works like a credit card except the money comes straight out of your checking account. But even though they feel like credit cards, they don't offer the same protection.
