Stock jumps 15% after identifying genes linked to cancer, heart disease
|
LONDON (CNNfn) - Oxford BioMedica PLC, a U.K. biotechnology company, said Tuesday it has discovered 23 previously unknown genes that may play a role in cancer, heart conditions and inflammatory disease. The company's shares jumped about 15 percent.
The Oxford, England-based company said it discovered the genes as well as several known genes that had not previously been linked to these diseases. The company made the discoveries through its proprietary Smartomics technology, a computerized screening process that rapidly analyzes groups of genes to determine their function.
Building on recent discoveries about the composition of the human genome, scientists now are working to unlock the function of genes.
They hope that once they understand how genes work together and which genes are involved in causing disease, they will be able to develop better diagnostic tests to unroot a range of maladies and craft more effective drugs that treat disease at the molecular level.
Oxford BioMedica was expected to provide details about its findings at a biotech conference in Boston later Tuesday.
In late morning trading, Oxford BioMedica (OXB) shares advanced 11 pence to 86.50 pence.
