Aircraft maker reports higher 3Q earnings on 11% lower revenue

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Aircraft maker Boeing Co. reported better-than-expected third-quarter earnings Wednesday despite a nearly 11 percent decrease in revenue.

Excluding one-time items, Seattle-based Boeing (BA: Research, Estimates) reported earnings of 72 cents a share, up from 56 cents a year earlier.  Earnings tracker First Call had expected the Dow Jones industrial average component would report 67 cents a share for the quarter.

Boeing said net earnings jumped nearly 28 percent to $609 million, or 70 cents a share, compared with $477 million, or 52 cents a share, in the prior year. Revenue fell nearly 11 percent to $11.9 billion.

Free cash flow for the quarter grew by $684 million to $1.5 billion.
