First time filings for state unemployment benefits dip by 7,000 in latest week

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits were reported at 307,000 for the week ended Oct. 14, up from a revised 314,000 the week before, the government reported Thursday.

Economists polled by Briefing.com had forecast U.S. jobless claims of 303,000 for the period.

graphicThe four-week moving average of claims, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, was 302,750 in the week ended

Oct. 14, down from a revised 303,500 the prior week, the Labor Department said. The four-week moving average declined for the fifth straight week.

Continued claims fell to 2,207,000 for the Oct. 7 week, the latest data

available, from a revised 2,162,000 in the prior period.

In the week ended Oct. 7 -- the latest week for which data are available -- 17 states reported an increase in claims of 1,000 or more. The states were  led by North Carolina with 8,843 additional claims, including more layoffs in the lumber/wood and textile industries. Back to top
